A Discussion of Long HDMI Cables - How Well do they Work?

Along with the varying specifications of HDMI cables, another factor to concern yourself with is the length of the cord. In the days of analogue video components, the length of the cable had no bearing on the quality of input or output, but in the early days of HDMI cables, the difference between the two became quickly apparent. Even over relatively short lengths of cable, consumers were experiencing problems. Of course, this has improved over time, but the length of HDMI cable you are using still has an impact on the performance of the cable.

To ensure that you are buying a long HDMI cable that will not also come with degraded signal strength, buy only those with proper certification. HDMI cables are examined by authorised test centres before they are released for public sale. Many are authorised for function at 10 metres and even some at 13 metres. These HDMI cables, as long as they are sealed with approval from accrediting centres, have been proven to not degrade the signal strength up to a certain point. The best piece of advice is to buy certified cables with the latest specifications, like version 1.4, though 1.3, 1.3a and 1.3b are also acceptable.

Cables that are even longer than 13 metres often come with powered amplifiers to give the signal a boost, a necessary addition when the signal must run such a long length of cable. An equalising unit is also used on these HDMI cables, compensating for lost high frequency data. While these systems work, there is no set length that it can work up to and the added expense combined with the additional possibility that the signal delivery will fail may take this option a step too far for most at-home theatre applications. Such systems are better left for commercial applications.

If you need a long HDMI cable for your at-home entertainment centre, you will undoubtedly need to pay much more if you wish to not limit the performance of your expensive equipment. Likewise, if you only need a short cable, go with that option because one costing only a few pounds will work as well as one costing near £10. However, if you attempt to buy cheap long HDMI cables, you will likely end up with an uncertified product that degrades the signal significantly. In conclusion, when it comes to long HDMI cables, you truly get what you pay for.
