What is the best turntable to purchase?

I am expanding my lp collection and would like to start listening to them with the best sound output (speakers with bass, etc.) possible. I do not nessecarily want to transfer them to cd, like most of the ones I see now offer. I also wonder about the speaker jacks, like can I connect a turntable to my stereo (a 5 cd changer with audio jack) ?

Turntables are in an interesting status right now. I'd suggest that you see if you can find a used one with direct drive and a magnetic cartridge. This is the sort of thing you'd be able to find at a garage sale. Make sure that the tone arm has its counterweight and that it can be adjusted to sit on the record with the lightest of pressures, only a gram or two. You may have to buy a new stylus for it; Radio Shack has them, or once did.

Your stereo should have "magnetic phono" inputs that will accomodate the high-sensitivity magnetic cartridge on your turntable. If it only has 'aux' or 'line-level' inputs, you'll have to add a small pre-amplifier to accomodate the magnetic cartridge. These are black, blank things that plug into the wall and boost the turntable's signal.

Keep the records clean--wash them if necessary; which you'll probably have to do if they've led a hard life--and make digital copies of them as soon as you can. Then you can edit out the clicks and pops from the record with audio software later.
