RJ-11 Connectors

The RJ-11 connector's wiring is available in two typical types – the Unshielded Twisted Pair, also known as UTP or the untwisted, flat-satin cable. Generally it is known to be the mostly widely used registered jacks, very likely triggered by the fact that virtually all of the solo line (POTS) of telephone jacks, regardless of offices or homes in North America and other country regions apply the use of such connector. There are other similar connectors such as the RJ-25 used for in a 3-line jack, RJ-14 suitably utilized in 2-line jacks, and RJ-61, specifically used only for 4-line telephone jacks.

Basically this type of RJ connector only uses 2 out of the total 6 wire positions thus allowing a 6P2C modular jack, implying having six positions and two conductors. But these jacks are rarely found in the market as majority of the jacks come in the 6P4C kind, having six positions and four conductors where two of the wires connected to the junction box are merely unused. Of course, the two additional wires can be used for diverse other applications such as inhibiting the pulse-dial telephone from ringing the extension bells, powering the LED ring-indicator that operates off the ringer signal and many others.

Throughout the powered-up state, the pins number 5, being the yellow or orange color and the pins number 2, being black or white in color in the RJ-11 connector may contain the DC or low voltage AC power. The power sources from the central transformer that is plugged close to a jack that supplies power to every single jack even during the dwelling. But in most times, the telephone line is the direct supply of power for the phone terminals.

For the antiquated telephone terminals that is equipped with incandescent lights, for instance the Trimline phone and the old Western Electric Princess phone; they may require more energy than the typical telephone line supplies. It also depends on whether the RJ connector is off old or new color code; the negative terminal should be colored red or blue and the positive should appear in either green or white.
