Choosing the Best Display: LCD versus CRT
As we move into a new decade, widescreen monitor or LCD monitors have become the preferred choice in many households. Due to its size, and sleek design many people want to get their hands on the latest models on the market. Thanks to the rapid technology advancement which has made the cost of LCD monitors a lot cheaper than what they used to be a few years ago. Nowadays, you could buy a widescreen flat panel monitor for as little as $150.00. To many computer enthusiasts, a LCD monitor is not a choice, it is a necessity. But nowadays, many desktop packages would usually already come with a LCD monitor; you won't really find a CRT monitor anymore even if you want one.
The benefits of widescreen monitor are heaps. Below we look at several different benefits that TFT LCD monitors have brought us since its invention.
The first benefit that comes to mind is definitely its size. No doubt that TFT LCD monitors can save a lot more space. An LCD display is much thinner and lighter than a CRT display of the equivalent viewing area. But before you buy your next widescreen monitor, you should know that LCD monitors are not the same size as CRT monitors. LCD monitors are actually larger for the same sized CRT monitor! With an LCD the whole screen area is active and viewable so there is no image loss at the boundaries. LCD monitors are measured by actual viewable area of the screen, therefore a 17 inch LCD monitor is 17 inches diagonally, a 19 inch monitor is 19 inches diagonally which means a 17 inch LCD monitor is roughly equivalent to the size of a 19 inch CRT monitor. Because its whole screen is viewable, another added benefit is it reduces glare problems. LCD monitors have uniform screen brightness and the screen is covered with a flexible surface that is substantially less prone to specular glare compared to a glass covered CRT screen.
With a widescreen monitor, images might not be as bright or sharp as normal CRT monitors but they are definitely a lot bigger and overall more fun to watch. But with rapid change of technology, nowadays LCD monitors can be as bright as CRT monitors. Watching a movie on a widescreen monitor is almost like watching it in the movie theatre. Also because widescreen monitors operate on a different technology than CRT so it means less eye strain and you can spend even more time looking at it without getting much eye strain.
Another benefit that comes with flat panel widescreen monitor is its low energy consumption level. It consumes energy much less than normal CRT monitor, both when running and also when in standby mode. Overall, LCDs can reduce display energy use by some 60%. Studies show that a 15" LCD uses around 25 watts when in operation and around 3 watts when in standby mode, compared with an equivalent 17" CRT monitor that uses 80 watts when in operation and 5 watts in standby mode. LCD screens can also recover from standby mode faster than CRTs and even consume less power. The uniform brightness of an LCD screen means that the screen can better tolerate variations in light levels and reductions in lighting also saves energy.
As you can see, there is no reason not to get a brighter, larger LCD monitor. The most common size of LCD monitor for computer use is probably the 19 inch LCD monitor, but for graphic designer they may demand a bigger one. But before you make your purchase, you should get yourself familiar with what you should look for when selecting a 19 inch widescreen monitor.
