Noise Management By The Brain

I was once asked on an on-line health forum, why it is that one would begin to get all itchy in the groin area just as one anticipates taking a bath. And why at other times, the itchiness would only commence immediately after one has had a bath.

My mind quickly went to the concept of the brain-body-connect. It is the same sense in reasoning, as why at times, one would begin to feel the overwhelming urge to pass urine only upon arrival at the convenience and not the long while before arrival, when resisting the urge was a relatively easier task.

I explained to the forum poster, that the skin, made sensitive by the presence of nerve endings of pain, temperature, pressure and touch, receives an endless array of stimuli by such factors as heat changes, dust, dust-mites, and so on - and all of these constant stimuli run a course through the nervous pathways, to then bombard the brain. And what does the brain do largely with these messages? So as to enable us have a normal day, free from every attention "buzz", the brain quietly processes these messages, editing most of them into the "Junk folder", as it were.

However, sometimes this balance of holding-off strong stimuli signals against an action-command to the body - such as an action to "scratch" - gets lost under overwhelming awareness by the brain. Due, in part, to certain over-sensitive body crevices as found in the groin area, for example. These are usually areas that have invariably been assaulted in times past by the agents that cause one to itch, and the brain gets overwhelmed in its "balancing act", at such times that it is "reminded" of these. Getting squeaky-clean after a soapy-bath, is another point in time of full awareness of the agents of "the itch", by the brain.

This brings us to the matter of noise management. Noise from the exterior that is ever present that varies from the soft and low-pitched sounds, to the loud and high-pitched - most times an admixture of these jumbled-up altogether. We refer to these sounds as noise, particularly when the various sound pitches lack a certain harmony in the way they relate to each other when they are perceived, are unwarrantedly visited upon the perceiver and hence tend to be annoying.

Noise management basically, is largely carried out by the Cerebrum. The Brain. This is observable in the manner in which people can stay focused on a task such that every distraction around them, inclusive of perceived noise, really do not register in their conscious thoughts. Too many times are we aware of some loud, constantly blaring sound, only after it suddenly ceases. Only upon the sudden silence, does the presence of some hitherto loud noise, register in our conscious minds.

By all means, avoid having to endure the unpleasantness of some noisy engagement or environment - purposely make a detour, plan ahead of schedule a noise-free experience, use headphones if you like, and so forth. But be rest assured that your mind - your brain - will always play its noise-filtering role in keeping you as focused, as internally secure as it possibly can, in any event.
