Consider a Phoenix Facelift

The benefits of a Phoenix facelift are endless. As the skin ages, its natural elasticity and wrinkle-filling mechanisms break down to the point where facial skin begins to sag and wrinkles begin to form. Drooping skin can get to the point where you look decades older than you may truly feel; though there are injectable wrinkle-fillers on the market today, very few procedures can lift and tighten facial skin.

This is where a Phoenix facelift comes into play. This procedure, when performed under the guidance of a qualified and experienced surgeon, lifts and tightens the skin and underlying facial structures – including muscles and connective tissues – leaving your face looking and feeling firmer and more youthful. Time has allowed medical knowledge and technology to develop and improve, providing you with variations on the procedure and the methods employed. This means that your surgeon can recommend a surgery to best suit your needs. Here, we'll take a look at a few of the more common facelift variations.

The SMAS Lift

The superficial masculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) lift tightens the superficial top layers and the deeper tissues of the face and neck, which tend to sag with advancing age. The incision is made at the temple and extended downward, allowing the surgeon to tighten and remove excess tissue while stitching the skin into its new, higher position. The best candidates for this procedure are individuals ages 45 and up with neck laxity and mid-face sagging.

This lift takes longer to perform than other facelift procedures, and also leaves a longer scar and extended recovery period. However, it is the gold standard in terms of correction and long-term benefits.

The Deep Plane Lift

Similar to the SMAS lift, the surgeon lifts and repositions the SMAS area, but goes even deeper than one normally would with a traditional SMAS procedure. It repositions the facial muscles as well as the upper fatty tissue layers and is best for older individuals with severe facial sagging. It is more extensive than other lifts, which prolongs the healing process; additionally, since the surgeon must work in close proximity to the nerves, the risk of facial nerve injury is higher than with other procedures. Despite its risks, the deep plane lift is very long-lasting – it usually provides the individual with a firmer face for 10 to 15 years.

The Short Scar Lift

In this procedure, the surgeon makes an S-shaped incision at the temple or, alternatively, in front of the ear. It allows doctors to re-suspend the tissues that support smile lines and tighten a moderate amount of sagging skin. This procedure is recommended for people in their 40s and 50s with minimal to moderate excess skin, and is not suggested for people who need extensive neck work. The short scar lift minimizes scars, comes with less swelling and bruising, and has a shorter recovery time, though its results are not as dramatic as other traditional facelifts.
