Cleaning Your Plasma Screen - 5 Do's and Don'ts

Whether it’s fingerprints from your 4-year-old or saliva from your overly eager four-legged friend, you may need to clean a plasma TV screen regularly. Here are 5 do’s and don’ts for cleaning plasma sets:

1. Don’t use regular household cleaners to clean a plasma screen. Typical cleansers contain a laundry list of harsh chemicals, which can react with the plastic and, over time, result in a foggy screen. What’s worse is that if the chemicals seep into the edges of the screen, it can destroy the electrical circuits there. Try to clean a plasma screen with an ammonia-based cleaner, and you could find yourself shopping for a new television.

1. Do consider using a natural homemade solution. Electronics experts recommend mixing a 1 to 1 solution of vinegar and water for cleaning an LCD TV screen as well as a plasma screen. Remember to use distilled water—tap water is full of dissolved minerals and salts that can leave an unsightly white residue.

1. Do consider buying natural products to clean your screen. Look for bio-degradable, enzyme-based formulas that give you the clear screen you want and keep your screen in good shape. Natural cleansers are also more convenient than creating your own at-home mix, making them a good choice for on-the-go people. As a bonus, natural products also have anti-dust properties meaning you may not need to use it as often.

1. Don’t use a dirty cloth to clean a plasma TV screen. It might be convenient to use the same rag you use to wipe down the kitchen counter, but hard bits and pieces can lodge themselves inside the cloth and scratch the screen. Protect your investment by using a clean cloth made with natural materials, such as a 100% cotton t-shirt or handkerchief. Microfiber cloths made especially for high-end electronics are also a safe way to apply cleansers.

1. Do be gentle. Elbow grease is fine if you want a kitchen floor your grandma would be proud of, but it’s definitely not okay for the delicate coatings on a plasma screen. Just like cleaning an LCD TV screen, use gentle, circular motions to remove smudges and marks. If you run into a particularly stubborn and greasy mark, simply repeat the cleaning process until it’s removed.

Your plasma screen is definitely not your grandfather’s television, so don’t clean it like one. By following these simple guidelines to clean a plasma screen, your can enjoy a clean television for many years.
